DataMac® Mexico 2023 Released

Our 2023 DataMac Mexico data has been released through our online application. And, for the first time, we have included all of the components that are offered in the U.S. and Canada Operator report. Our detailed data includes 831 components across medium and heavy duty vehicles, trailers, and transit buses and motor coaches.

Our research partners conducted an extensive survey process in Mexico, surveying owners and maintainers of commercial vehicles. Our written report will be released this month and will detail the economic factors in Mexico, the Distributions Channels, Point of Service, Type of Replacement parts utilized in the service activity, Vocation and unit and dollar demand.

Additionally, we are offering two new report purchasing options: 1. Payment for the report can be extended over a 3-year timeframe (or until the next Study update) 2. Purchase the Executive Summary, as a stand-alone report.

“The Messy Middle”

Interested in knowing more about the “messy middle” (thanks to Mike Roeth for the term!)? What are fleets considering as alternative energy options for future use? How far along are they in the process? What vehicle makes are fleets considering? How soon are they expecting to test drive? Purchase?

We see this as an on-going service monitoring fleets’ progression, shifting away from diesel into alternative energy. Examining this shift will enable you to anticipate future market needs and how quickly fleets are making the transition to alternative energy.

Our field research has begun and the first report will be published in the near future.

Service. Service. Service.

It has been four years since MacKay & Company last evaluated the medium/heavy duty truck and trailer service market. What has changed in the operating universe in these four years? A few changes worthy of mentioning include:

  • Production and retail sales of new trucks and trailers have been strong in the past few years.

  • The average age of Class 7 vehicles has increased by 4 years. Overall, Class 6 vehicles, on the other hand, have slightly decreased in age over the same 4-year period. Class 8, the largest portion of the operating vehicle classes has aged slightly over the past 12 years.

  • Given the complexity of the newer vehicles, the service requirements are rapidly changing as more and more technology is integrated in components and requiring service.

In our upcoming study, we will take a look at what service challenges lie ahead:

  • Where are fleets completing the service required on their vehicle? What is the rationale behind this choice?

  • Given the number of serviceable units, how large is this service opportunity? Who is garnering this opportunity?

  • How do the service practices differ by vocation of use, size of the fleet, truck brand, engine brand, first vs. subsequent owner and geographic region?

  • What are fleets looking for in a service provider? What are the top reasons for choosing their current provider? What would precipitate a shift in service providers? What current service needs are unfulfilled? How far will they travel for service? How long will they wait?

  • Specifically, what are your trailer service needs? Have these needs shifted over the past several years? Are you anticipating any new trailer service needs on the horizon?

  • What can the component suppliers do to support the service channels, ultimately aiding the fleets in their quest for uptime? What should suppliers provide to ensure that fleets’ vehicles are receiving the service support they need?

MacKay & Company’s 2023 Truck and Trailer Service Study will detail these topics and many more, including those that are of interest to our clients who subscribe to the study! Early participation in this study will allow you to provide input, addressing those service topics that are important to you and your team.
